07/20/2010 July Dry Fly Fishing
Today I scheduled a half day trip with a new angler, Bobby Martin. He caught over 10 rainbows on DRY flies! The fish are big and healthy and the water is super clear! We started the day out by drifting and after a hooking a few we noticed many trout coming to the surface and eating bugs, so we decided to throw some dry flies and WOW! At one hole alone, we hooked into over 10 fish! It may be tubing season, but only 6 kayaks come by us and just a couple rafts, no rubber hatch- all after 11am. Aside from the heat, it really felt like we were fishing a river up north- cold water, fish rising and no traffic. Here on the Guad, it is not often that we get such opportunities to sight-cast using dry flies to so many fish. Opportunity is now, Truly a Great Day!

07/08/2010 July Trout Fishing
Typically, this time of year the rubber hatch and the stressful high temps discourages us from trout fishing on the Guadalupe. This year however, has been pretty rainy and the water temperatures are staying down, which is great on the fish. The rainy morning of July 8th I decided to see what the fish were doing so I loaded up and headed to the river. After arriving at the "destination" I felt like I was up north, with no one on the river, cold wet wading and rainy......oh, and rising fish after rising fish in front of me. The water clarity was perfect allowing me to see fish everywhere. To make a long story short, the fishing is great right now, the fish are BIG and healthy and this rainy weather is perfect for trout fishing the Guadalupe. Don't let the July heat keep you indoors in the air conditioning,........Get out and fish!
04/16/2010 Great fishing despite conditions
Despite flooding river predictions, rain and wind. we had two great days on the Guadalupe and the San Marcos Rivers. Brett and Gary of the Texas Fly Fishers out of Houston made nasty weather predictions turn into great fishing memories. On the first day of their trips on the Guadalupe River, Canyon lake was scheduled to release 1200cfs and we were told that we may not be able to fish untill noon and fishing was going to be tough, we fished the enitre day with stretched lines and perfect conditions. The second day we decided to hit the San Marcos and again, nasty weather was predicted to make our day miserable. We had little rain and nice flows throughout, again making another relaxing and enjoyable day to fish.
These two days reminded me of an old fisherman saying......"The best time to fish, is when it's raining and when it's not"!

Fishing has been incredible! Two ReelFly boats netted over 25 fish on March 26th, with avg size fish of 16" and some going to 22-24"! The fish are feeding excellent as mayflies, march browns, PMD's and caddis flies are hatching everywhere. The flows are perfect and, in my opinion, the fishing is the Best it's been all season. Tim, pictured, landed two incredible fish that you would expect to find in places like the White River or Colorado. Take a look at the gallery to see some of the latest action.

03/20/2010 Guadalupe Trout Fishing Excellent!
Trout fishing is still excellent on the Guadalupe River. The flows are perfect and trout fishing has been holding steady with good numbers of healthy big fish. Lately our weather has varied from sunny calm days, to windy rainy days and the fishing outcome has remained the same- GREAT! Since the recent high flows, the fish are holding in areas that we've not seen in years, allowing steady fishing opportunities throughout the entire float. Our prices allow anglers the opportuninty to not only take great float trips, but also have enough left over change to get a nice place to stay. For the same price other guides charge for a day on the river, you get a full day float trip for two as well as one night of lodging at The Creel, complete with a 6 person hot tub, fireplace and outdoor kitchen. What are you waiting for?......Call us today to make your reservations and take full advantage of this opportunity while you can!

02/28/2010 Fishing Conditions
The White Bass are running in large numbers in the upper Guadalupe and the flows in the lower Guad are excellent! Now is the time to get the lines wet and get into the boat. On the lower Guad, flows are the highest they've been in years, allowing us more opportunities to fish bigger water and float with ease. Patterns that have been working well are Egg paterns, San Juan worms, large olive and rust Wooly Buggers and we've also started seeing some good hatches of PMD's and March Browns. Since the flows are rolling around 800cfs, fish are not holding in the pools they've been in and instead, moving around the river from what was un-fishable two weeks ago to what is now three feet deep. In the past years we've only had certain areas (deeper holes) that held fish and those spots were hit by fisherman on a constant basis, causing fish to become line shy and making fishing those holes a 'take-a-number' scenario- Well not anymore. Now the entire lower section of the Guadalupe is fishable with excellent flows, making fishing conditions similiar to the rivers up north.
On the upper Guadalupe the flows are equally great and the fishing is getting better by the day! Large numbers of female White Bass are being caught, as well as Stripers and Largemouth Bass. The flows are allowing us to move drift boats at the perfect rate and we're also able to wade fish from the sand bars making conditions ideal for a White Bass fishing adventure.
Bottom line, now is the time to come! We're offering the best fishing packages around for you, at unbeatable prices and sure to kick off your summer with a bang! Spend the first day fishing the lower Guadalupe for excellent Rainbow Trout. Retreat back to our B&B, The Creel, take a dip in the hot tub, relax beside an open fire pit, watch some fishing television in your cabin while the fireplace warms you up, or take in the day with a glass of wine. The next day it's back in the boat on the upper Guadalupe river for all day line stretching White bass action and beautiful scenery. The entire package is a steal at $625.00 and the experience and memories will stay with you forever. Book your spot today, March is almost full and April is right around the corner.
Life is short......get out and have yourself a ReelFly Fishing Adventure with us today!

02/07/2010 White Bass Season
It's that time of year to hit the river for the white bass, a.k.a "sand bass". There have been reports of anglers catching fish up at Rebecca creek, reports have been male white bass, but since the males will generally run a month of females it means it's time to get going. The white bass will generally spawn in 2-8 feet of water, over gravel beds. Females can lay up to 900,000 eggs and they will generally hatch with three days. TPWD requires the fish be at least 10inches in length and daily bag limit is 25 fish. During their first year white bass will generally grow up to around 1/2 pound, around 8-10inches. The current state record was caught in 1977 and weighed 5lbs and 9 ounces and measured 20.75 inches in length.
For fishing white bass anything typically white and shiny. My favorite pattern is the chartruese and white clouser minnow with either lead or bead chain eyes. I find this fly to be the most productive and the clouser is very easy to tie and is very durable. We offer a premium float trip to target these fish above Canyon Lake. The trip cost $300 (1or2ppl) and includes lunch, and all lonaer equipment. This trip is a fun filled day with constant action and great country scenery. Call today to book your reservations, the season only last untill around April.
